The Dragon Boat Festival, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is a traditional festival of China. Originated in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the Dragon Boat Festival hasa history of more than 2,000 years.
The most popular saying of the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival is to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan.
One of the customs of the Dragon Boat Festival is dragon boat race, which is held to pray for a good weather for the crops and a good harvest.
Another custom is eating zongzi, the tradition of eating zongzi is meant to remind us of the village fishermen scattering rice across the water of Miluo River in order to appease the river dragons so that they would not devour Qu Yuan.
In addition, during the Dragon Boat Festival, people will drink realgar wine, wear sachet, hang moxa calamusto ward off disease and bad luck.
The Dragon Boat Festival,together with the Spring Festival, the qingming festival, Mid-Autumn festival, becomes the most important traditional festival of the Chinese nation.
It was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009.
